Why I add Supplemental Curriculum

Why have even MORE curriculum, you ask? Sometimes, your core curriculum needs a little something extra depending on the individual student. However, I only add supplemental curriculum when I feel it is a need because more is not always better. In fact, in my experience over the years, I have found too much to be detrimental.

Particularly, for us, this year’s social studies curriculum primarily focuses on Bible History. Therefore, as I shared in my last post, we are adding Story of the World to supplement history.

Supplementing Writing

In addition to history, I felt Noah needed extra work in the area of writing. For that reason, I have added BJU English 6. However, we will only be focusing on the parts of that curriculum concerning various writing lessons and exercises. Although, I do feel that the A.C.E. curriculum is sufficient; currently, I have recognized this is an area we need a little additional assistance.

Exciting Add-ons

Equally important, I have added a few pieces to help our school days not be so stagnant. These pieces not only add a little element of fun but also incorporate opportunities for learning. Therefore, I have added a few science and history DVDs and a Spanish game. I will use those add-ons throughout the year when appropriate.

Final Thoughts

At first glance, this may seem like a lot. In reality, though, it truly is not. Throughout the year, these pieces add a little flavor and break up stagnancy. Additionally, there are various other ways to supplement any part of homeschool.

Field trips, movies, puzzles, games, and real-life experience are all avenues that can add a little something special to any homeschool day. I encourage you to expand on certain topics that your student seems extra interested. Those moments can foster opportunities to expand your student’s love for learning. I would love to hear what are the different ways that you supplement your homeschool.
